Nisei Post 1183: 2014-2015 Installation of Officers

• The Chicago Nisei Post 1183 held a reception for the installation of officers from 2014 to 2015 at the American Legion Memorial Civic Center in Morton Grove on September 21. Nisei Post also presented “Nisei Post #1183 Scholarship” to three young recipients.
• Kolly Takaki was reappointed as Commander for the year of 2014 to 2015.
• Other officers are: 1st Vice Commander Herbert Wunar Sr., 2nd Vice Commander Allen Meyer, Finance Officer Joseph Gallas, Chaplain Mokoto Fukuda, Judge Advocate Allen Meyer, Sergeant-At-Arms Enoch Kanaya, Service Officer Ken Kadoyama, and Historian Alfred Fujii.
• The recipients of Nisei Post Memorial Scholarship were: Elizabeth K. Yamashiroya and Trenton T. Takaki. Kristen E. Yang received the Todd S. Tomiyama Memorial Scholarship which was instituted for the second and third-year-college students.

• Elizabeth K. Yamashiroya is the recipient of the High School Senior Scholarship and a graduate of Niles West High School. She participated in Beverly Breast Cancer Walk, Appalachia Service Project, Relay for Life of Evanston, and the 2013 Illinois History Expo. She is a member of the National Arts Honors Society and has participated in numerous art shows, and also scholastic art and writing competitions.
• Yamashiroya has volunteered at Camp Mor Gro, the Anixter Center, and the Morton Grove Public Library. She created and donated artwork for the Niles North High School charity auction and is an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Evanston.
• She plans to attend North Central College and major in Art Education.

• Trenton T. Takaki is the recipient of the College Freshman Scholarship and attends Indiana University. He is on the Dean’s List and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. He enjoys playing soccer and has given public piano performances for various academic, cultural, and community groups.
• Takaki volunteers as a coach for the Sansei Yonsei Athletic Association, supports the Heartland Alliance, serves meals to Uptown residents, and is an active member of the Christ Church of Chicago.
• Takaki has just completed his freshman year and is majoring in Piano Performance and Biology.

• Kristen E. Yang is the recipient of the Todd S. Tomiyama Memorial Scholarship and attends the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has been the Historian and Technology Chair for the Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity and a Student Ambassador for the College of Business Student Ambassador Program. Kristen is serving as the President of the Illini Women’s Ice Hockey Club.
• Yang is a member of the Devon Church and participates in their activities, service, and volunteers to help with their children’s programs. She also plays piano, sings, and delivers valentines to the residents at Heiwa Terrace. She has participated in the Adopt a Family program delivering gifts and groceries to families in need; helped send meals and seeds to impoverished families in Zimbabwe; and participated in mission trips to Costa Rica. She has participated in Relay for Life to support cancer research; Detroit Outreach cleaning-up neglected neighborhoods; participated in the inaugural Kansha Project; and assisted the Greater Chicago Food Depository during Thanksgiving.
• Yang has started her fourth year at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and majors in Supply Chain Management and Information Services/Information Technology.
