Japanese Women’s Judo Leaders Visits Chicago for JCCC/Komatsu Cup Junior Tournament & Judo Clinic

• JCCC/Komatsu Cup, a Japan-U.S. friendship judo tournament for young wrestlers, was held on July 28 at Step Ahead Sport in Palatine, inviting participants aged between 5 and 16.
• An open judo clinic for all ages was held alongside the tournament.
• Mika Sugimoto, Coach of Komatsu Ltd.’s Women’s Judo Club in Japan and the 2012 Summer Olympics silver medalist, and Megumi Ishikawa, Vice Captain of the same club, flew to Chicago to teach the clinic.

• Eighty-four young contestants competed in the tournament by division, while a total of 140 individuals including members of local judo clubs participated in the clinic throughout the day.
• This event was co-sponsored by Komatsu America Corp., Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Chicago (“JCCC”) and Tohkon Judo Academy and support by Japan Airlines.

• A Japanese-style lunch box was offered to each participant, while the Super Team of the Nippon Ginkenshibu Foundation, visiting Chicago in the foundation’s 50th anniversary celebration, performed classical poem reciting and dancing for entertainment.

• The award ceremony and a raffle drawing followed the tournament. A ticket to Japan was presented by Japan Airlines as a special award. All participants received a T-shirt as a memorabilia of the Cup.

Mika Sugimoto:
• Born in August 1984, Mika Sugimoto assumed the current position in 2012, as she won the silver medal in the Summer Olympics in London.
• She is the winner of many tournaments and championships including the Kodokan Cup in 2005 and 2008, IJF Grand Slam Rio de Janeiro in 2009, World Championships in 2010, Asian Championships in 2010, All Japan Championships in 2011, IJF Grand Slam Tokyo in 2011, and more.

Megumi Ishikawa:
• Born in November 1988, Ishikawa has been with the Komatsu’s Women’s Judo Club since 2011.
• Her winning records include the 2011, 2015 and 2016 Kodokan Cup, 2013 and 2014 European Open, 2013 Asian Championships, 2015 East Asian Championships, and more.
