Seiko Ikka Nakashima

Seiko Nakashima, age 87, of Chicago, IL died peacefully on July 8th. Born Seiko Kanbayashi in Hokkaido, Japan, she mastered numerous Japanese cultural arts including tea, flowers, calligraphy and classical dance before moving to the United States upon her marriage in 1950 to the late Takao Nakashima of Hilo, Hawaii. She spent her life working in microbiology and teaching the beautiful arts she studied in Japan. In 2006, the Emperor of Japan awarded her in his Tokyo palace with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays for her accomplishments.
She is survived by her long-time friend and companion Ameer Ali; by her niece, Yoshiko Takeuchi; by nephews Sadanao Kanbayashi and Saira Nojima; by generations of students whose lives she enriched, and by thousands who were touched by her life and art. Interment will be beside her husband in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. A memorial service will be held in Chicago.
