Rbert Duane Snider
Robert Duane Snider passed away in Ashland, Ore. July 5, 2014. He had
been in declining health for the last several years. He was born January
7, l937, in Weiser, Idaho to Floyd and Myrtle (Hepp) Snider and attended
elementary and high school there. He was very much involved in school
activities, especially in public speaking, winning a trip to the United
Nations along with other honors. Blessed with an excellent baritone
voice, he often performed at weddings and other events in his youth.
After graduating magna cum laude from the College of Idaho, he attended
the University of Chicago on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, receiving
his M.A. in political science in 1962. Robert pursued additional graduate
work in political science at both the University of Washington and the
University of Toronto (Canada). While at Chicago, his thinking was shaped
strongly by the political philosopher, Leo Strauss and later by other
Straussians, including Allan Bloom at Toronto. His career in Seattle,
Alaska, and Chicago included teaching college courses in political science,
grant administration, and legal research.
In 1995, Robert married the love of his life, Hideko Tamura, whom he
first met at the University of Chicago in the 1960s. They lived in Chicago
until the couple retired to Medford, Ore. in 2003.
